I don’t know about you, but there are a lot of “supposed to-do’s” that I absorbed when embarking on a writing career. A lot of hangups. A lot of internalized bullshit.
I thought I had to write 8 hours a day and felt like a failure that the long, all-day sprees some friends went on were something I could never quite do. What kind of writing practices and routines and pitching schedules actually worked for me?
I knew that I loved being online, historically comfortable in community-oriented digital spaces (I first got on LiveJournal when I was fifteen), but I initially wasn’t sure how to be a person and a professional on Twitter. How could I invest in a public, digital presence among my literary community that had boundaries, but where I could still develop relationships that felt nurturing and real?
And for years, I was completely stumped as to how I was supposed to build a writing career and incorporate my other professional interest, astrology, which had come bursting into my life like the Kool-Aid man. How to blend two seemingly disparate careers? And also, wouldn’t my writing community — so literary, so serious, so New York — judge the fuck out of me for being an astrologer? Even if I used astrology in my private life to determine things like ideal times to pitch and revise, that didn’t feel like something real writers said out loud.
As it turns out, the answer to all of these questions — and so many more — was right there in my natal birth chart.
What kinds of writing routines work for me — in a way that is shame-free and sustainable.
What kind of public presence to build — and what kind of boundaries to enact.
How to integrate two seemingly disparate career interests — and make money doing them.
Understanding my birth chart unlocked a confidence and new access to creative energy and career growth that I had never imagined possible. I got a six-figure job working for a famous astrologer. Then, I got a book deal with my dream editor. Eventually, I left my day job to work and write for myself.
Astrology has been integral to every step.
Applying astrology to your writing fundamentally disrupts the white supremacist, patriarchal capitalist narratives that insist there is one magical, most-efficient way to produce, and that anyone who doesn’t produce that way is inherently wrong or destined for failure.
But that isn’t true. And not just in my own life — I’ve seen astrology help clients and students break out of writer’s block, unstick years-old creative projects, and revolutionize the way they approach making money.
This is why I teach Astrology for Writers: How to Make Your Writing Work For You.
It’s also why I’ve totally changed the course this time around.
When I first conceptualized Astrology for Writers as a live course, I never thought it would be popular enough to run multiple times a year (3 so far since it launched in January — y’all are amazing). I am so grateful for everyone who has joined me in the classroom for 4- and 8-week sessions, and so very proud of what we’ve accomplished together.
But there are a lot of folks who, because of job schedules, childcare, budgets, non-US time zones, and more, have asked for a version of the class that has more flexibility. This is what I have heard from you: that you want to understand how your chart connects to your writing — but on your own time, at your own pace. So let’s make the class work for you, too.
I’m thrilled to be transitioning Astrology for Writers: How to Make Your Writing Work for You away from a live weekly course and into an evergreen, self-paced model.
Using workbooks and brand new instructional videos, you get to work through the (admittedly large amount of!) material at your own speed, on your own time, in the comfort of your own home — no regular Zoom commitment necessary.
Moving away from a live instructional model with office hours also means that the course is now roughly ⅓ of its original price: $397.
The course includes 8 modules, each with multiple pre-recorded videos and accompanying workbooks & exercises, covering all the material that the live course version does:
your sun —> your sense of purpose
your moon —> your body & emotional life
your ascendant/rising —> your life direction
your chart ruler —> the planet steering your life
your mercury —> your communication style & how you process
your 2nd house & its planetary ruler —> how you make your money
your 3rd house & its planetary ruler —> your writing process
your 10th house & its planetary ruler —> what you’re known for
BONUS: Venus (pre-order only) —> your aesthetics
BONUS: Mars (pre-order only) —> your work ethic
The evergreen course is going to be available — in full! all the modules dropped in your inbox at the same time! — on October 24th. (Please note: the class will only be available for a limited period of time; more on that soon.)
But, a bonus.
Everyone who pre-orders the class will receive extra modules examining your natal Venus (the artist-lover), which has to do with our relationship to art and aesthetics, and your natal Mars (the action star), which has to do with your work ethic.
Fun fact: Mars and Venus are not general topics covered in the live version of the course — they are extras, exclusive to everyone who pre-orders.
This class is a permission slip to totally transform your relationship to your own work. It’s a container for you to sit with your own unique cosmic map. It’s an invitation to completely rework your understanding of what your writing means to you & for you in this moment.
Let’s do this.
The evergreen class sounds great! Will we be able to get our own planetary aspects at birth or do we need to know them in advance?
