Really enjoyed reading this. I’ve enjoyed experimenting with creativity in the way you so elegantly write about about in your newsletter.
I actually finished a labor of love that I gifted to my daughter. It’s a quilt made from her favorite t-shirts she wore growing up paired with fabrics and themes that give a bit of insight to her personality during the last 14 years. There are lots of little inside jokes paired with lots of colors. I hope it will keep her warm at school. I can’t insert photos into the comments but maybe I can upload it to the discord.
So here for this mindset about creativity, and so impressed and appreciative of the way you weave your own life experiences and lessons into your work for us! 💜💜
so much of this is resonating with me, and i’m really looking forward to using this as a model to reflect on my year and how my relationship with creativity transformed
So so cool!!! Especially happy for you re: rest. 💚
I need to think some more about my own creative accomplishments this year, but I think a big one was letting go of stuff that no longer brought me joy, and go towards what actually motivates me even if it felt a bit scary.
I dove headfirst into balancing my creative pursuits with being a mom and caregiver for my mom. It’s been a lot, but it’s forced me to get clarity on what I want to be doing and lean into those projects wholeheartedly. I branched out from my former beats and wrote a personal finance article for the New York Times and sold an essay to TODAY on my fifth try.
Biggest achievement I’m in the modem DJ m hosting, organizing, and working on finding sponsors for a 1-day summit in May 2025 around personal storytelling. There’s been so much to learn about booking a venue and speakers and all sorts of other logistics. I didn’t realize how isolating I felt working entirely virtually or how much I’ve missed in-person literary event planning. I don’t know for sure if it’ll be the success I envision in my head, or if I’ll break even, but it’s exciting. And the other big thing I did was hire an assistant and hire someone for help with brainstorming article ideas and providing accountability. They’ve both been very helpful even though I’m used to managing all of my tasks myself so I’ve had to learn to delegate and collaborate.
This is so beautiful. As an academic I really dig your insights and this gives me energy for thinking about creativity more fluidly (or giving myself permission to do that?). And as a fellow surgery recoverer this year, just…. I feel you! Congrats on taking that time off!!!
