I'm spending Eclipse day in my Totoro onesie with two old friends eating snacks and watching animated movies. The last couple of years have been a trip and I'm not tempting fate in the 11th hour.
Thank you, by the way, for noting the ritual power of the Christian Right. We'd be crazy to discount it and must do what we can to stand spiritually in opposition if we hope to balance the scales.
As an anti-Zionist Jew, I made a video about why calling “from the river to the sea” anti-Semitic is actually just Zionist propaganda and why the phrase is a call for freedom for all, not one of genocide or displacement of Jews. If people are interested in that they can check it out: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPR7vy9YW/
There’s also some great writing from Jewish websites about the history, too!
It is pretty terrifying to think of all that collective ritual and praying happening for certain causes each Sunday in Evangelical churches...I love the invitation to engage in our own spiritual practices to pray for Palestinian liberation. Thank you for that reminder <3
I don’t agree with what the Israeli government is doing to the Palestinians. It’s terrible. And I want it to stop.
But I’m disappointed to see that you don’t even mention the atrocities Hamas committed against the Jewish people. They raped children and kidnapped grandparents. The most Jewish people were killed in one day since the Holocaust.
Israel was created to protect the Jewish people. As a young American Jew I grew up learning that the world hated us and wanted to kill us and that at least now we had a place to flee to if things got bad.
Like you, I’ve learned and grown since then. I know that Israel isn’t the perfect and blameless country we learned it was.
But ever since the Hamas massacre I have felt less safe in the world as a Jewish person. Both because of what they did, and because most of the people I respect (I’m also liberal, an astrologer, and have lots of queer friends) make pro Palestine posts without even mentioning all of the Jewish people who were brutally murdered and raped in their homes, and the 200+ hostages who are still in Gaza, many of them children and elderly people.
Innocent Palestinians deserve to be protected and prayed for. And innocent Jews deserve to be mentioned and prayed for, too. I will be praying for both.
Hi Daniela. Thank you for your comment, and for reading so generously. I am also praying for both. I would offer that I do not think that supporting the Palestinian people (who I do not equate with Hamas) in the wake of genocide inherently means or implies that we do not also mourn the loss of Jewish lives. But I appreciate you noting the oversight on my part.
Hi Jeanna. Thanks for your response to my comment. I noticed you used the word “genocide” in your response. Genocide means that one group wants to completely erase another entire group from existence. I see a lot of people using this word about what’s happening in Gaza. Maybe because so many Palestinians are being killed, which is devastating.
However, using the word genocide implies that Israel is actively trying to kill all of the Palestinians. This is not true. Israel is trying to kill Hamas. There are many Palestinians living in Israel and in the Israeli government. Israel does not want to kill the Palestinians. Unfortunately, Hamas intentionally hides among civilians to maximize the deaths on their side. It’s heartbreaking but that’s part of their strategy as terrorists.
Also, even if you’re not implying that you don’t mourn Jewish lives, when you don’t mention the deaths of 1,400 Jewish people in an article about the situation in the Middle East, as a Jew it feels like the pain and mourning of my people isn’t important to you.
It’s not just you - so many astrologers and leaders I respect use the word genocide and gloss over the huge loss the Jewish people have experienced. This leaves me feeling very unsafe in the world.
I think it's self righteous of you to use the phrase "from the rivers to the seas" and tell jews what it means and doesn't mean. do you want to tell us what "Arbeit macht frei" means too?
